The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive—the iconic epic fantasy masterpiece that has sold more than 10 million copies, from acclaimed bestselling author Brandon Sanderson.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiant killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

Minor Spoilers Ahead: This book was boring. Half of the book took place in the Spiritual Realm where they looked at past events. 1/5 of this book revolved around Szeth's past and how he was wronged. Also you can tell Brandon Sanderson is trying to grow his ties to Hollywood because there was a lot of wokeness in this book. For example: Adalins brother Renarin is attracted to men. In one chapter he is drooling over another man and he is too scared to ask him out because he is scared that of rejection and that the other man might have a wife. Also the Uritheru spren known as the sibling identifies as gender neutral. This book was trash. When Szeth was the assasin in book 1 and 2 it was always exciting when he showed up. he sent shivers down my spine. He becomes a good guy and becomes practically useless. I would have loved to have seen him attacking the Fused and leaving them in dissaray.

I found myself disappointed in the execution and direction of this book. Without going into spoilers I'll say the way certain characters and the world is written was noticeably different in this book compared to the previous series entries. Too many modernized political talking points, references, and dialogue were added that either contradicts how characters would act based on the built up world lore or breaks immersion away from the fantasy. Not only that but the book is a little long winded with unnecessary focus on minor topics. It also contains entire plot elements that could've been resolved with greater impact within a chapter or two rather than being revisited throughout the book in a watered down fashion.

bloat. therapy and other language feels out of place (not in-universe, more modern than fantasy. doesn't have a consistent voice to it like, say a GRRM ISOIAF). Juvenile humor and handling of many issues (war, sex, etc). Believe the 1st law series is too depressing and handles characters and events too cynically and roughly, but would take some of its realism for this series- which is on the other end of the spectrum. Handling of mental health much better done in Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings. (More realistic and not hamfisted like this book feels). Sanderson is great at conclusions and finales though. Wish characters would have interacted more (like Navani and Kaladin in book 4) and focused on less characters to get more time with our main hero: Kaladin. overall: 7/10 book. Least favorite in Stormlight Archive. Will skip almost all past events on reread.
