Elizabeth “Bette” Leigh Black comes of age in the years before World War II. Although money is scarce in the aftermath of the Depression, her home life is happy and filled with love, and Bette dreams of one day having her own family. Eagerly and secretly, she becomes involved in anti-Nazi espionage, even though it forces her to lie to her fiancé and others. After the war, she says “I do” and retires from her work, but she discovers that married life is not the happily-ever-after dream she imagined. When unexpected hardships arise, she is forced to rely on her own strength, make some painful decisions, and take the necessary steps to finally win true happiness.

Lyn Cote (pronounced “co-tee”) is the award-winning author of historical novels. She was born in Texas, grew up in Illinois on the shores of Lake Michigan, and raised two children in Iowa. She now lives in northern Wisconsin with her husband and two cats.
Anna Fields, whose real name was Kate Fleming, died December 14, 2006, when a flash flood trapped her in her Seattle studio. She leaves a wealth of recordings, including novels by Jane Smiley, Joyce Carol Oates, Louise Erdrich, and Ruth Ozeki (for which she won an Audie in 2004). Her work earned 15 Earphones Awards in total, and she read more than 200 audiobooks in her eight-year narrating career. She trained at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and performed in Washington, D.C., before settling in Seattle, where she began her audiobook career.
