Free and open source, but still comes with a great design. Also has push notifications, swipe actions, folder customization and a dark theme. I never had any issues with the synchronization of 6 different accounts (Gmail & self-hosted). Only thing I'm missing is the option to customize the quick actions on a notification, I'd like to be able to archive a mail right from there.

I just realized that K9 mail does not store sent e-mails into the sent folder. They simply disappear completely without any trace. Apparently you have to set the folders manually for each mail account in the app. Because for some reason the automatic/default setting is "Automatic (none)" instead of just creating folders or mapping to existing folders with the same name - or at least *ASKING* the user.

(Jan 2025) Checking these reviews, I will not update the app at this time because I don't want to mess it up! So often updates wreck a perfectly good app. UPDATE#2 I had to redo my email credentials because it stopped receiving emails. It seems fine now. I use this for only Startmail. I am avoiding updating the app itself, I don't know why it loses the credentials, it goes a very long time without a glitch so maybe the issue is on Startmail's end, but I am happy it works now.
